About Downtown Merced Arts & Culture District
With community at its core, the district is a cross-cultural & creative space growing into its next chapter. Set within Merced’s historic downtown and just off Highway 99, it offers a walkable core where creativity, performance, and everyday life intersect. Live theater & performance are woven into downtown life, bringing people together through storytelling, music, and shared experiences. Along Main Street and the surrounding downtown blocks, these performances exist alongside visual arts, public art, local shops, dining, and nightlife, all grounded by historic buildings and landmarks that give our district a strong sense of place.
Reflecting the many cultures that call Merced home, the district supports a wide range of artistic traditions and shared community expression. Cultural celebrations and festivals - from Diwali and Hmong New Year to Mercados and seasonal parades - bring people together across backgrounds and generations. The district is shaped through performances, gatherings, and everyday moments that make the arts feel accessible, personal, and lived-in. More than just a destination, it’s a shared space where everyone can find their place in Merced’s cultural life.
