About the Historic South Los Angeles Black Cultural District
The Historic South Los Angeles Black Cultural District formally recognizes South L.A.’s deep and enduring cultural contributions and celebrates the community’s historic Black assets. Formal recognition as a cultural district is a vital step toward addressing historic inequities and ensuring Black cultural treasures are protected and celebrated. South L.A. has a historically high rate of Black residency and is home to the highest concentration of Black cultural assets in California, including museums, local businesses, restaurants and entertainment venues. Shaping a vibrant future where Black culture is centered, community members and leaders of South L.A. are committed to public investments in cultural infrastructure and preserving these areas of Black historical significance that reflect the resilience and creativity of South L.A.
